TIMBOON Demons A grade netball coach Leah Sinnott has found plenty of positives in her sides two opening victories.

The Demons backed up its round one victory with a win, overcoming an early Dogs challenge early before pushing away to triumph 50-21.

“The first week was probably a little easier I guess whereas this week Dennington, particularly in the first quarter was a good test for us,” Sinnott said.

“With respect to last week’s opponent, there weren’t a lot of challenges that made us alter our game and think our way around the game like we had to in the first half (on Saturday).

“I made a few changes at half-time which opened it up for us and then we pushed the lead out.”

Those changes saw goal attack Raina Hunt shift to wing attack, while Laura Rosolin came into goals as Kelly Gowland came from the court.

“In attack we were struggling to find clear space to pass into so I brought off Kelly and put Raina into wing attack,” Sinnott said.

“I also brought Laura, another of our goalies, into goals and it (that move) changed the space.

“I wasn’t sure if it would work, but that’s the gamble I suppose you take and it worked in our favour.”

Sinnott said the response to the swaps was also well received.

She said it indicated her side was able to adjust on the fly, which made it easier for her to implement change.

“I was also pleased that the girls picked it up seamlessly and pleased with how they responded with the total switch of our attack end,” Sinnott said.

“The girls down the defensive end also did a great job down there so on a whole it’s been good.

“It’s good to see the girls taking the things we’ve spoken about out on the court and then putting it into practice.

“From a coach’s point of view I can’t complain.”

The Demons are now gearing up for one of this season’s tougher matches in Merrivale.

The Tigers have also opened the season with two victories and will present Timboon with an early litmus test.

“It will be a real test and good leveler to see where we sit in the grand scheme of things,” Sinnott said.

“It’s not the be all and end all but it’s a good yard stick to see where we need to improve against the stronger teams.

“There’s no point hitting these sides until later in the year because it gives you the chance to work on it (that improvement) early.”

Sinnott said her side’s depth would be crucial to its chance in the contest.

“That’s the key for any team, to have depth on the interchange to make changes or try something different and see if it works,” she said.

“In an ideal world you want your starting seven to get the job done but when you haven’t played anyone before that you need that trial and error I guess to see how it pans out.”
