Disappointing end for Bombers
THE 2023 finals campaign came to an end for Cobden’s senior footballers on Sunday when they were defeated by Terang Mortlake.

THE 2023 finals campaign came to an end for Cobden’s senior footballers on Sunday when they were defeated by Terang Mortlake.
A big crowd at Gardens Oval was kept on its toes during the elimination, which saw the lead change several times throughout the match.
The Bloods went out firing in the opening term, adding five majors to the board while containing the Bombers to two goals three.
A second-quarter comeback saw the Bombers take a narrow one-point lead heading into the main break before the Bloods once again lifted in the third, adding four majors to end the quarter with a handy 18-point lead.
Reflecting on the game, Bombers coach Dan Casey said while it was a disappointing end to their finals campaign, he was “absolutely stoked” with how his side performed.
“It’s certainly disappointing not to get the win but the boys all put in a huge effort and I’m extremely proud,” he said.
“They were all certainly abit flat in the rooms afterwards but it was a great game of footy and probably one of the best I’ve been involved in for a long time.
“We just didn’t take our opportunities in the last quarter and to Terang Mortlake’s credit their backline stood up under pressure and that was probably the difference in the end.”
Casey made particular mention of the efforts of Jack Hammond, Paddy Smith and Brody Mahony (who were all named in the best) along with Daniel Watson, Ben Berry and Mark Marriott.
Goal kickers were Berry, Hammond and Mahoney (two each), along with Michael Koroneos, Marriott, Henry Robertson and Watson with one apiece.
The club’s reserves footballers went down to South Warrnambool by 50-points last weekend and will now face Warrnambool in this Saturday’s preliminary final.
The Bombers got off to a relatively slow start on Saturday, adding just 1.1 to the scoreboard in the opening quarter while the Roosters booted six straight majors.
The second quarter was another tough one for the Bombers, who struggled to make an impact on the scoreboard and finished the half 43-points down.
The Bombers worked hard in the third term to add three goals to the scoreboard before being contained to just two behinds in the final term.
Final scores were South Warrnambool 12.11.83 to Cobden 5.3.33.
Best for the Bombers were Louis Robertson, Louis Cahill, Jack McGlade, Tom Mahony, Thomas Marshall and Brady Green.
Cahill, Thomas Darcy, Luke Hickey, Nicholas Kemp and Joshua Worboys kicked a goal each for the Bombers.
In the under 18.5s, Cobden lost to Hamilton 7.5.47 to 11.10.76.
Best for the Bombers were Kurtis Baker, Angus Molan, Ben McGlade, Archie Taylor, Tyler Humphrey and Gus Walsh.
The Bombers’ open netball side will now face Koroit in this Saturday’s preliminary final after going down to South Warrnambool 37-61 last weekend.
Best for the Bombers were Sophie Hinkley, Sophie Blain and Emily Finch.
Reflecting on last weekend’s game, open coach Sophie Hinkley said an eight-goal deficit after the first quarter made it a tough day for the Bombers.
“We were even for the first minute or so and then they just took off and we found ourselves playing catch up all day which is always a tough ask against quality opposition like South,” she said.
“We didn’t capitalise on our turnovers and we made some silly errors. After the first quarter we struggled to get our heads back into the game.
“It’s obviously such a huge mental and physical task. It isn’t impossible to get up from an eight-goal deficit but that requires us to have the right attitude and mindset and as a group we struggled to overcome that.”
Hinkley said her side would now focus on this Saturday’s clash with Koroit.
“Koroit will be another big challenge for us so we need to make sure we show up and bring the right mindset,” she said.
“We need to make sure last Saturday’s big loss doesn’t impact us on the court this weekend.”
An exciting 45-35 goal win over Koroit last weekend has earned the Bombers’ division one side a spot in the grand final.
Best for the Bombers were Rebecca Dendle, Nikki Clover and Grace Taylor.
They will meet the winner of this weekend’s preliminary between Koroit and Hamilton.
Cobden’s 17 and under netballers went down 39-47 to Warrnambool in last Sunday’s elimination round.
Best for the Bombers were Kate Smith, Matilda Darcy and Nikki Clover.
In the 17 and under reserves match, Cobden went down to South Warrnambool by just one goal, 37-38 and will now face Warrnambool this Saturday.
Best for the Bombers on the weekend were Shelby Cameron, Rebecca Foster and Krystal Blain.
