District to pay its respects

ACROSS the district residents will turn out to Anzac Day services to pay their respects.

In Cobden, now an annual tradition for the 1st Cobden Scout Group, co-ordinator of the service John Wason said the community was invited to attend the service on Tuesday, April 25.

He said the service would begin at 11am at the Cobden cenotaph.

Mr Wason said the group was looking forward to the annual service.

“It’s a good experience for our young Scouts to be involved in,” he said.

“A few of the Scouts will be doing readings as well.”

Mr Wason said the 1st Cobden Scout Group was pleased to be able to continue to offer the service for community members.

He encouraged residents to attend the community service at the Cobden Cenotaph.

Individuals and groups wishing to be involved in the wreath laying at the Cobden service are asked to contact Mr Wason on 0434 387 093.

“We’ve got about 30 wreaths to lay,” he said.

“If any business or volunteer organisation would like to place a wreath, please get in contact.”

Community members are welcome to bring their own wreaths on the day as well.

A light morning tea will follow the service.

In Simpson, a community service will be held at the Simpson flagpole in Jaycees Park on Monday, April 24 at 10.30am.

The community is invited to attend. Attendees are asked to bring their own chair or blanket.

Timboon Action is organising an event in Timboon this year which includes a march and service.

Timboon Action president Heather Martin said the march was begin at the Timboon Senior Citizens Centre at 8am and will walk to the Soldiers Memorial in the Power Creek Reserve.

“The procession will be led by a tribute to the Light horsemen,” she said.

“The feedback and reaction from the community has been amazing.

“A memorial service will follow the procession.”

Ms Martin said this will be the first time in “a long time” there has been a community service in Timboon.

“We’re working in conjunction with the Port Campbell dawn service,” she said.

“We’ve structured it so people can go to both.”

Ms Martin encouraged community members who would like to be involved in the procession to get in touch.

“We’re excited that this is something we can bring back to Timboon,” she said.

A dawn service will also be held at the Port Campbell war memorial for community members at 6am.
