DRESSES, gowns and other items of vintage clothing walked out the door last weekend during the sale of Dorothy Nicol’s vintage fashion collection.

The clothing, ranging from the 1800s to early 2000s, attracted interest from Lismore residents and visitors alike.

Items in the sale also included clothing worn on television series, with one dress appearing in the series ‘All the Rivers Run’ and a pair of underwear that were used the show ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’.

Lorraine Graham, a close friend of Dorothy’s, said many people that bought clothing from the sale did so for a variety of special reasons.

“An ex model bought several outfits. A local fundraiser also bought lots in the hope to have a fundraiser for Camperdown Hospital and other places,” she said.

“One lady bought several wedding dressings and veils to be cleaned, mended and sent to Israel for underprivileged women to wear when they get married,

“Another lady bought a lot of wedding and debutante dresses and evening gowns for underprivileged young ladies to wear in Queensland, so they can do their debutante balls.

“Another local lady bought many outfits of local history interest to put away for future history.”

Several items, including an old child’s crib were donated to the Derrinallum-Lismore History Rooms, where Ms Graham hopes a display may be put up in recognition of Dorothy and all her charity work and exhibitions.

“Dorothy, who often went without food to buy her treasures, would be proud,” Ms Graham said.

“Everyone had a great time going through the gowns and other items, many of which suit the young people of today.

“A lot of people travelling through stopped; people from all over the western district called in.

“This brings to the end of an ear going back to the 1980s and a kind-hearted lady whose passion for her collection of 20th century clothing and other items bought much financial relief to many who needed it.”

Whatever is still left over from the weekend sale will be taken to op shops in the area or sold on at other garage sales.
