ATAR results were released across Victoria on Monday, with many students feeling mixed emotions alongside their families.

Camperdown College announced its two duxes this week, with Lewani Bateman as VCE dux and Ruby Walsh as VCE Vocational Major (VM) dux.

Principal Xavier Davis said the school was proud of all students who undertook VCE and VCE VM this year and thrilled to announce the duxes for 2023.

“Both students’ dedication to their studies has been well rewarded,” he said.

“This achievement not only reflects their academic ability but also highlights the commitment to excellence fostered at Camperdown College.

“Lewani has juggled her study commitments with her role as Student Voice Leader and performing with the College string ensemble, whilst Ruby has been a leading presence around the college in her role as School Captain.

“Congratulations to Lewani, Ruby and all the Year 12 students for their remarkable achievements and accomplishments.”

Lewani said she is happy with her results as it will get her to where she wants to be.

“I’m definitely going to go and do further study, possibly in Melbourne,” she said.

“It was a bit of a surprise; I was not expecting it.

“It was pretty much a shock, but after the shock, it was kinda like happiness because I’m like” yeah, I can get to where I want to go now”.

“Everything was just falling into place for my future.”

Lewani wished to thank her parents for their continued support throughout their schooling.

Ruby, Camperdown College’s VM dux, said she was messaged by her year level coordinator about her achievement, and scrambled to write a speech to present to her school on Tuesday.

“I was a bit shocked, but then I was very happy. I can’t thank Sue Maskall (year level coordinator) enough for the year; she’s brilliant top work alongside,” she said.

“I’d like to thank Camperdown College, and all the staff and teachers who have walked through these doors over the last 13 years.

“They have all been wonderful, so supportive, and really helpful to get me to where I am now.

“I’m quite shocked, but I feel very honoured to be able to represent Camperdown College as VM Dux of 2023.”

Ruby said she is hoping to get into primary school education in her future.

“I’m quite happy to be coming back here next year as a teacher’s aide in the classroom for both campuses,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to that and getting a bit of knowledge in the field of education support.”

Derrinallum P-12 College’s dux Declan Leech said his score was good and what he wanted.

“(My) plans for the future; take a gap year, then go into a Bachelor of Commerce, which will lead hopefully into a career of accounting,” he said.

“I’d like to thank all my teachers over my schooling, both at Lismore Primary and Derri College.

“Wouldn’t have got Dux without their help.

“I feel really good; I feel like 13 years of schooling’s really paid off.”

Derrinallum P-12 College principal Caitlyn Fitzgerald said all graduating students appear to be on their desired pathways for their post-schooling lives.

“We are exceptionally proud of all our Year 12 students,” she said.

“Their hard work and perseverance have carried them through the year well, and all of them have achieved pleasing results.

“They put in a lot of hard work, and we’re really glad that they made it all the way across the finish line.

“We are so delighted that Declan’s hard work throughout his two years of VCE has paid off for him, and that his scores will enable him to be able to access his desired pathway post school.”

Mercy Regional College’s (MRC) 2023 Dux was Ronan Ludeman.

Having completed his studies in Business Management, Chemistry, English, Maths Methods, Specialist Maths and Physics, Ronan said he was very pleased to achieve Dux of the College in 2023.

Ronan said he aspires to attend university next year to study either Engineering or Science.

“I am very happy to be awarded the Dux of MRC,” he said.

“I would like to thank my parents, all of my teachers and my fellow students for pushing me to do my best.”

Principal Sharon Gillett is proud of the efforts of all students.

“All of our students have shown great resilience and work ethic and it is wonderful to see such great results,” she said.

“I congratulate Ronan on achieving Dux.

“We wish our young people all the very best with their future pathways.”
