TUESDAY proved bittersweet for Thompson’s Hotel owner Robert Gayton, with the hotel business freeholdofficially sold.

Thompson’s Hotel, or Thommo’s as it has affectionately become known as over the years, had been in the same family of118 years.

The popular hotel was built by Mr Gaytons’s great grandparents and has only been leased out for 16 of its 118 years.

The remaining 102 years has seen a descendant at the helm of the hotel.

Mr Gayton, who also runs City Oval Hotel in Ballarat, said he had made the decision to sell the pub, with it officially being put on the in April.

Mr Gayton said settlement was Tuesday, September 6.

“My landlord that owns City Oval in Ballarat has bought it,” he said.

“It’s taken me a couple of years to do it (sell it). I’m good with the decision.”

Mr Gayton said the pub was in good hands with current leasees, Belinda and Michael.

“Hopefully I’ve left Cobden with a pub that they can be proud of for many years to come,” he said.

“Having a good tenant is important, Belinda and Michael are doing a great job.

“I’m very pleased for Thommo’s and Cobden.”

Mr Gayton thanked the Cobden and district community for its support over the years.

“A big thank you to Cobden from me and my family for all the great years that we have been associated with Thommo’s,” he said.

“For as long as I can remember, Thompson’s has been a part of my life.

“I wish everyone well.”
