Exhibition boosts education

THE launch of a new art exhibition has earned a tick of approval from Terang’s youngest critics: Hampden Specialist School students.
The exhibition is the latest on display at Les Cameron’s creative hub at the old Terang Courthouse.
Terang artist Jason Eldridge developed the exhibition, titled ‘Simple Complexity: a walk through an artist’s mind’, utilising his interpretive style of pointillism.
The technique is comprised of small points of pure colour to develop patterns which form an image.
“I like to take the complex and make it simple,” Mr Eldridge said.
The works had drawn inspiration from artists Wassily Kandinsky, Mark Rothko and MC Esher.
“Taking all that, plus the complexity of the colour, I’ve melded it all together to create these artworks,” Mr Eldridge said.
The exhibition helped to provide an education boost in recent weeks, with Hampden Specialist School students visiting after learning about the pointillism technique in class.
Hampden Specialist School principal Kylie Carter said the students had “absolutely loved” the experience.
“We separated the visits to step up the level of understanding, but it’s been great for the students to meet an artist,” she said.
“Jason was great with the kids, giving the students a demonstration of how it’s all done and we’ve been talking about pointillism."
“It is wonderful to have this resource right here; so often when we want to do something like this we have to go to Warrnambool, so having a local artist has been really good.”
Mr Eldridge said sharing his knowledge of art with local students had been a rewarding experience.
“The students had a look at all the artwork and we worked on some experiments with the techniques I showed them to create our own artwork,” he said.
“It has been really enjoyable."
“The exhibition has been a true growing experience as an artist."
“I’ve had a few people coming in throughout the weeks and a great crowd on opening night, so it’s been wonderful.”
Simple Complexity: A walk through an artist’s mind will remain open until later this month.
“We’re having our closing night on August 25 and then it will possibly be open for a few more days to allow people to come in and get their artworks,” Mr Eldridge said.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday-Friday from 1pm-5pm, and Saturday 10am-2pm.
