COBDEN Historical Society welcomed descendants of the Scouller family to the hall recently.

Paul Scouller with daughters Olivia and Alex paid a visit from Sydney in a quest for information about their family.

Historical society member Jennifer Kripp said research found great grandparent Robert Scouller married Mary Anson in Geelong 1861, eventually settling at Carpendeit in 1873.

She said the pair went on to have 11 children.

“While clearing the land they ran a sawmill, Scouller’s road at Carpendeit was named after the family,” Mrs Kripp said.

“The family members spread in different directions however Robert (Bert) Scouller wed Edie Alexander in Camperdown 1928, this led to our visitors grandfather Alex Scouller who married Jean McLean and came to reside in Cobden.

“The couple were active in the community supporting the football club, rifle club 1960-1965.”

She said Alex purchased a radio/wireless in 1940 from Edward McLean who ran an electrical store in Cobden where the Cobden Kindergarten now stands.

“The family donated the radio to the historical society and it was restored by Harold Errey from Cobrico who ran a similar electrical store in Cobden in later years,” Mrs Kripp said.

“Those were the days when you had to purchase a licence for 20 shillings to own a radio; this law was highly unpopular and the government rescinded the law in 1974.”

The family were able to see Alex’s radio during the visit in a link to their family history.
