Fast-starting Bombers down Bloods
A STRONG start proved the catalyst for Cobden’s 29 point win over Terang Mortlake on Saturday.

A STRONG start proved the catalyst for Cobden’s 29 point win over Terang Mortlake on Saturday.
The Bombers worked hard into the breeze early in the contest to kick three unanswered goals, with Adam Courtney’s side using its start as a springboard to prevail 11.18 (84) to 8.7 (55).
“We had a good start against the scoring end, we kicked three goals on them quickly which was important to score against the breeze and then we really consolidated in the second term,” Courtney said.
“We doubled our lead and pretty much controlled the first half but in the third quarter, credit to them they were able to move the ball quickly which caught us out a few times.
“Then in the fourth quarter we got back to doing what we did well in the first half.
“I think we might have kicked 3.8 so we could have easily put them away but it was nice to have another win which was good (for the boys).”
Courtney said his side would look to fix its accuracy in front of goal, particularly with some bumper contests ahead.
“We’re still looking to nail our conversion,” he said.
“We spoke about taking our opportunities before the South game and being able to take them against good sides; playing against a side closer to us we probably got away with it.
“The important thing is we’re getting plenty of forward entries late in the game which shows our fitness is at a good point and we’re running out games well.
“But it’s (our conversion) something we will be working on because we play some good sides after the break and we need to be nailing those chances to be in those games.”
Ruckman Mark Marriott’s strong form continued for the Bombers, with the 202 centimetre tall best afield in the victory.
“Mark Marriott was outstanding in the ruck,” Courtney said.
“He was a clear best on ground and his follow-up work after the ruck was really good.
“Jesse Williamson on the wing was also good. He received plenty of attention from the Terang Mortlake boys but he still found a lot of the footy.
“He kicked four but his defensive pressure and tackling was good which was great for him. A couple of defenders, Zac Green and Ricky Sullivan, were also solid performers.”
The Bombers are now set to use the bye this weekend to “freshen up a bit” ahead of a round 10 clash against North Warrnambool.
