Final round for Camperdown bowlers
THE last round of the pennant season for Camperdown Bowling Club was played last Saturday.
Members also said goodbye to Mark McDonald and Michael Nixon who are both heading interstate to write a new chapter in their book of life.
The club wishes them well and thanks them for all the work that they have down around the club.
Division one played at home to Camperdown Golf although the result really wasn’t what they wanted.
Rink one saw Luke Wright, K. Rundle, H. Van Someren and R. Bourke have a two-sided game.
Leading 11/9 and winning nine ends to five at the break, they could only manage one shot on the 19th end to go down 12-30.
Matthew Brewer’s team played on rink two and was 14-16 down.
After the break they regrouped and the score was 17-all after 17 ends.
Both teams scored on four ends each, but Burgers’ team scored 11 shots to six and won 28-23.
Ron Cameron, Barry, Jayden and Maria lead for the majority of the day, except for one end.
They picked up five shots on the first end, and then four shots on the 14th end.
This put them 17-9 up at the drinks break.
For the next six ends they never scored and were down 17-18 going into those last very important five ends.
They scored on the next four ends and won the game 24-19.
Mark McDonald’s team played on rink four.
They started well and led 7/6 on the seventh end but by the 14th end they hadn’t scored and were 7/21 down.
The break and a drink were much needed.
They came out and tried hard but just couldn’t peg the lead back and went down by 10 shots, 18-28.
The final ladder: Apollo Bay, Winchelsea, Colac, City, Simpson, Camperdown, Central, Camperdown Golf, Cobden and Lorne.
Camperdown’s number two side travelled to Simpson.
Ron Absalom, Max, Pam and Gerard started off really well and led 9-5 on the fifth end and 11-8 by the 10th.
They then only scored on five more ends out of 11 to go down 15-25.
Stan Adeney, the two Les’ and new player Donna combined really well and were leading 14-2 on the 11th end.
They then only scored one shot on the last 10 ends to give up their lead and the win, going down 15-17.
New skipper Gerard Noonan, Michael, Jimmy and Henry started well leading 14-4 on the 11th end and 21-10 on the third last end.
They almost did the unthinkable by letting their opposition score four and five shots on the last two ends.
However, they hung on and won 21-19.
Tom Hose, David, Jimmy and Gordon were the last rink.
Coming off their big win the previous week they didn’t disappoint and led 15-3 at the 11th end.
Both teams scored on five ends each but it was Camperdown that had a big enough margin and won 24-13.
This was a great win that helped win the game by one shot overall. Congratulations Camperdown 2.
Final ladder for the season for division three was Cobden 2, Colac 3, City 3, Simpson 2, Camperdown 2, Derrinallum 1, Colac 4 and Lorne 2.
Division four was a combined side between Camperdown and Lismore to keep a team alive and for Camperdown players to get a game.
They won three games for the year and also had a couple of close games.
They played Camperdown Golf 3 at the Lakes, going down 52-77.
The final ladder was Camperdown Golf 3, Winchelsea 3, Cobden 3, Cressy 2, Camperdown Golf 4, Central 3, Birregurra 2 and Lismore/Camperdown 3.
The club had a barbecue tea and break-up with Veteran Badges presented to Ron Cameron and Pam Atchison.
It was a great night, thank you to all who helped.
On Sunday the Club Open Pairs grand final was played between Luke Wright/Mark McDonald and the Brewer Boys, Matthew and Jaydan.
The Brewer Boys got the jump on Luke and Mark and led 8-3 on the sixth end.
Luke and Mark then settled and won five out of the next six ends to be 15-9 up.
In the last six ends each pair won three ends each and on the third last end the difference was only two shots in favour of Luke and Mark, 17-15.
They then picked up six shots in two ends to become the Open Pairs Champions for 2023/2024 season.
Monday night was the final round of the Corporate Challenge.
Twenty-eight teams competed over four weeks in perfect conditions.
The winners of the night was Volcanic Construction, runner-up was Commercial Hotel, with GBM third.
