THE finals campaign continues for five of Cobden’s netball sides.
Last weekend’s qualifying and elimination rounds saw the Bombers take to the courts in all but one game – with open, division 1, division 2, 17 and under, 15 and under and 13 and under sides flying the Bombers flag.
Senior coach Sophie Hinkley said the club was extremely proud of the netballers’ season to date and was looking forward to continued success on the courts.
“To have six teams in finals is a reflection of the commitment of our entire playing group and our coaches and other volunteers,” she said.
“Our division one team lost its elimination final on Sunday but we still have five teams in finals which is amazing.”
In the open division, Cobden defeated Koroit 53-39 and Hinkley said she was extremely happy with the way the girls were able to maintain momentum for the full four quarters.
“We were up by nine at half-time, which was a similar margin to our previous encounters with Koroit, and we then extended that lead by three-quarter time and ran the game out,” she said.
“To be able to stretch that lead in the latter part of the game, particularly in a finals atmosphere, is terrific.
“Momentum can swing very quickly but our girls had the ability to run the game out and do the things that we do well; we didn’t let Koroit dictate us and the results showed.”
Best for the Bombers on Saturday were Remeny McCann, Emily Finch and Lara Taylor.
The Bombers’ 17 and under side enjoyed a 47-43 goal win over Camperdown with Emily Darcy, Jessica Bouchier and Lara Taylor named best on court.
And in the 15 and under game on Saturday, Cobden lost to South Warrnambool 24-27.
Matilda Darcy, Krystal Blain and Ruby Darcy were best on court.
This team will now play its semi-final this Sunday in a ‘must win’ game.
Last Sunday’s elimination finals saw Cobden’s division one, two and 13 and under sides take the court.
Division one lost to Portland 26-33, putting them out of the finals race.
Best for the Bombers were Rebecca Dendle, Holly Duynhoven and Meagan Forth.
Division two defeated Hamilton 40-26 while the 13 and unders defeated Terang Mortlake 20-16.
Best on court for Cobden were Lila Bennett and Milla Darcy.
