Fishing fun for everyone

FAMILIES from across the district are being invited to enjoy a day at Lake Bullen Merri for a family fishing day next Sunday.

A joint day organised by the angling clubs of Camperdown, Cobden and South Purrumbete, the Family Fishing Day will allow residents of all ages to get a taste of fishing on October 13.

Organiser Jim Boyd said the Camperdown Angling Club received a letter from the Victorian Recreational Fishing peak body saying the organisation will sponsor the day.

He said the free day aims to provide information on the angling clubs and fishing tips for first-time fishers.

“It’s just a matter of getting people, interested in fishing and hopefully – the three clubs have got aging committee members – we’re hoping some younger people will come on board and join up,” Mr Boyd said.

“We hold monthly competitions and do interclub competitions, and we go over to Nelson every year.

“We just want to get the people interested.”

The day will run from 10am to 2pm, and feature different competitions in the men’s, women’s and junior boys and girls under 16 years categories.

“There’s a fishing competition on for the heaviest brown, rainbow or tiger trout and chinook salmon, and then we have a casting competition for the young ones to show them how to cast,” Mr Boyd said.

“There’ll be a display of different rigs for fresh and saltwater trout fishing.”

A free barbecue and soft drinks will be available after 12noon on the day.

Mr Boyd said registrations on the day are available at South Beach at Lake Bullen Merri.
