NOORAT Primary School students had the opportunity to experience life as a pilot last week thanks to a visit from the Royal Flying Doctor Service’s (RFDS) life-sized simulator.

The simulator landed on school grounds as part of the Flying Doctor Education Program.

RFDS education manager Tom Ryan visited with an animated retelling of the RFDS history and what makes the organisation such a crucial service.

But the highlight for students was the opportunity to climb in to the cockpit of a life-sized RDFS flight simulator fully-equipped with all the aero medical equipment the service utilises on a daily basis.

Student Callum Baird was in awe of the opportunity to step in to the shoes of a pilot landing the life-saving aircraft.

“The best part was being a pilot in the flight simulator,” he said.

“I moved the controller and the plane on the screen moved too.”

Classmate Mackenzie Gurry said she enjoyed learning more about what the RFDS doctors do aboard the plane.

“We were able to learn about medical equipment and practice using a stethoscope to listen to our heartbeats while on the plane,”she said.

School principal Ilona Watkins thanked the RFDS for visiting.

“It’s wonderful to be able to have fantastic programs such as the RFDS Vic out visiting schools again and sharing the work that they do,” she said.

“Students loved the high of interaction that was provided by the staff, and interest among the community was high.”
