Former TDHS board chair airs concerns
FORMER Local MP and former Chair of Timboon and District Healthcare Service (TDHS) John Vogels AM has voiced concerns over potential hospital cuts and mergers.
He said in light of recent reports on potential hospital cuts and mergers, and the Victorian Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas’s “vague responses,” significant concerns have arisen regarding the future of TDHS.
“Many of the services provided by TDHS to its community are funded by the Federal Government rather than the State Government,” Mr Vogels said.
“This raises a critical question for Minister Thomas: What will happen to the services covered by the Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) model that currently funds TDHS?
“Specifically, which services will be retained, and which will be lost?”
The MPS model, a Federal Government initiative, allows older people in rural and remote areas to access essential aged care services within their community.
Mr Vogels said this model also offers space and facilities for a variety of local activities and community services.
He said a key feature of the MPS model was its multi-disciplinary team approach, providing consultative and ongoing care and support for individuals with life-limiting illnesses.
“Under the MPS model, TDHS successfully delivers three types of aged care: residential, short-term, and home care,” Mr Vogels said.
“However, the proposed changes under the rumoured State Government health models do not accommodate the unique structure and services of the Timboon Model.
“This discrepancy raises concerns about the potential loss of vital services that many community members rely on.”
He called on the Victorian Health Minister to “provide clear answers and assurances” regarding the future of these essential services under the new health models.
“The community deserves transparency and a commitment to maintaining the high standards of care currently offered by TDHS,” Mr Vogels said.
The Cobden Timboon Coast Times understands an independent committee provided its report to the Victorian Government for consideration, with the government still considering the advice.
A Victorian Government spokesperson said “only Labor invests in our health system”.
“The Liberal National Party continues to run a shameless fear mongering campaign,” the spokesperson said.
“The Opposition is the only political party that cuts and closes hospitals.
“We are investing a record $20 billion into our hospitals this year alone – and an additional $8.8 billion multi-year investment in this year’s budget.”
