A PURPLE tinge will soon arrive along roadsides throughout the Moyne Shire, after the Moyne Shire Council approved a new purple-lidded bin service for glass collection.
Despite initially being slated to run as a trial in Koroit, councillors approved a move to broaden the glass collection service across the shire at Tuesday’s Ordinary Meeting.
Recent closures of SKM Recycling facilities have caused the shire’s recyclable materials to go to landfill.
Costing up to $250,000, shire mayor Mick Wolfe said the new infrastructure would allow the council to move away from SKM Recycling.
“Moving ahead with a shire-wide rollout of glass-only kerbside collection is not just better for the environment, it is better economic management of our waste,” he said.
“Under a new campaign, Better4Moyne, council will be working with residents to improve waste separation, ultimately reducing the amount of recyclables going to landfill.
“By introducing the fourth bin and separating glass, which currently accounts for around 40 per cent of recyclables in yellow kerbside bins, all recyclables become easier to process.”
Shire chief executive officer Bill Millard said the purple-lidded bins would be emptied monthly.
“With the bins taking around three months to be manufactured, the change to collection is likely to begin after the new year,” he said.
“Over the coming months we will be focusing on our Better4Moyne waste education campaign and continuing to work with our waste collection contractors to finalise the revised collection schedule.”
Moyne Shire residents are encouraged to cease placing glass in the recycle bin and place it in the red-lidded garbage bin until the additional new bins are rolled out.
