Freemasons receive special Scottish visit
FREEMASONS of the Leura Masonic Lodge had a special visitor to their lodge earlier this week.
The lodge welcomed International Scottish tenor and freemason Alan Beck at a special Monday evening meeting before his appearance in Naroghid at the Winter Soiree on Wednesday.
Leura Masonic Lodge president Robert Fischer said Mr Beck had previously visited the area during last year’s Robert Burns Celtic Festival.
“I met him when he was here last time. He wasn’t here very long because he had to go somewhere else, and he sort of fell into our lap,” he said.
“He’s just visiting with Dr John Menzies and visiting with the Robbie Burns committee.
“He just wanted to meet the local freemasons.
“He came along, and he gave us a small rundown on his lodge back in Scotland.”
Mr Fischer said the freemasons at the meeting had an “enjoyable” evening.
He said Mr Beck was “impressed” with the lodge, and was interested in its history.
“We had a nice supper and social evening, and he then gave us a couple of tunes with his vocals, which was very, very good,” Mr Fischer said.
“When you’re sitting in a stout, which is where we have our supper, and you can’t hear yourself think with the chatter – that was what it was like.
“It was a very enjoyable and relaxed meeting.
“I have had correspondence with him, and he said he had a very enjoyable evening with us.”
