Funding announced for local groups
MOYNE Shire Council has awarded $86,000 in funding to community groups across the shire under the latest round of a popular funding stream.
Councillors voted unanimously at last week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council to allocate funding under round two of council’s Community Assistance Fund, with 20 different groups cashing in on the allocation.
Cr Damian Gleeson said the funding was well deserved for volunteers who are the backbone of the community.
“I’ve said it every month since I’ve been a councillor, but the majority of the good things that happen in our shire are based off the back of volunteers,” he said.
“This is a great way councillors can support those volunteers.”
As mover of the motion, Cr Jordan Lockett said he was in favour of the diverse representation of groups from across the shire all receiving funding.
“There’s a great spread across the shire and you can see the diversity of the clubs and associations, and the great things they’re up to,” he said.
Cr Daniel Meade seconded, offering his congratulations to the recipients.
“That’s what it’s about,” he said.
“Encouraging all the large and small committees that people give up their time for to provide a facility, an event or an activity for the rest of their communities to get involved with.
“There are many shires across Australia that don’t offer this kind of thing, especially the part where there doesn’t have to be a matching contribution, so I’m pleased to see it’s popular and getting put to good use across the shire.”
Moyne Shire allocated $51,845 in matched funding to groups across the shire for projects over $3000 including roofing, strategic planning, and court resurfacing.
This funding stream included $15,000 for the Framlingham Recreation Reserve for a roof replacement to stop leaks, and $15,000 for the Woorndoo Recreation Reserve for resurfacing of two deteriorated courts.
Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the fund supports community facilities, acquisition of equipment and assistance toward community programs and initiatives.
“It’s so important to support groups, clubs and organisations to make improvements on community facilities, assets and programs,” he said.
“Combined with the first round of funding, over the year we have provided $226,500 to groups right across Moyne Shire for a wide range of projects and equipment.
“This funding encourages a self-help culture amongst groups and creates collaborative partnerships with council that help build stronger communities.
“We very much look forward to seeing these projects come to life and congratulate all the latest funding recipients.”
In addition, $34,315 had been awarded in the Under $3000 category, which was signed off by the Acting CEO.
The funding included $2962 for the South West Sheepdog Club to purchase a PA system, and $2718 for the Mortlake and District Historical Society to purchase a new computer, software and printer.
