THE Garvoc Community Goods and Services Auction shattered records over the weekend with $26,665 raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Held on Sunday, the annual auction eclipsed its previous highest donation tally, and totalled over $5500 more than the previous year with hundreds of items and services all hotly contested.

Garvoc District Residents Incorporated president Adam Bellman said the record-setting total was a “tremendous display” of support from the community.

“We’ve still got the fire truck going around town on Good Friday (April 15) so we’re probably going to pass the $27,000 mark,”he said.

“We were lucky enough to have 190 items up for auction with a lot of new faces and new donations, and everything sold.

“We’re very happy to have that levelof support.”

The items and services were donated for auction from across the south west, with businesses and members of the community alike chipping in for a good cause.

Among the items auctioned was the in-demand last jar of Tinki Bellman’s Yo-Yo biscuits, which sold for a whopping $500.

“The Yo-Yo’s beat last year’s total by about $50, which was great,” Mr Bellman said.

“Everything was hotly contested at the end of the day with multiple bidders for most items.

“It was such a great day, with everyone bidding away as much as they could to provide what assistance we can to the Royal Children’s Hospital.”

This year’s Goods and Services Auction was the first to be held at the new Garvoc Community Hub, located across the road from the old Garvoc Hall.

The community put the larger space to the test, with standing room only during the auction.

“We want to thank everybody. It’s hard to single out everyone individually because of the overwhelming support,” Mr Bellman said.

“To all the businesses and individuals who donated, we’re very grateful for their assistance and we look forward to being able to support them through the year.

“Thank you to the community for their generosity and support, and to the committee for arranging and holding the auction.

“We look forward to getting some more donations next year and hopefully bettering our total.”

Moyne Shire deputy mayor Daniel Meade, a Garvoc resident, said the tally raised for charity spoke to the generosity of the community.

“It’s an amazing result which definitely sets the record, so well done to the Garvoc and district community on their efforts to raise a huge amount of money for the kids,” he said.

“Also thanks to all the businesses and individuals who donated their goods and services for the auction.”

Cr Meade said he was glad to see the community enjoying the new Garvoc Community Hub.

During his time as mayor, Cr Meade was involved with the project to bring the new community hub to fruition under joint funding between the State Government, the Moyne Shire Council and the Garvoc community itself.

“It’s great to see the hall and everyone appreciating the new facilities that are there,” he said.

“The community helped to fund that project so it was great to see it being put to use for a great cause.”
