Gordon stars in Magpies victory

A DOMINANT first half and a 10 goal haul to a key forward underlined a comfortable 59 point win for Camperdown last Saturday.
The Magpies burst out of the blocks to kick four goals in the space of eight minutes and seize control against Port Fairy at Leura Oval.
They continued to add goals at will, with key forward Sam Gordon continuing his impressive season in attack.
The big man kicked 10.5 in the 17.14 (116) to 8.9 (57) victory, which pushed the Magpies eight points clear in fifth place entering this weekend’s league-wide bye.
Camperdown coach Neville Swayn was delighted with his side’s performance, especially with the way they moved the ball.
“Our first half was really pleasing,” he said.
“It was as good as we have moved the ball with our running game and we were able to set the game up by half-time.
“Our ability to move the ball quickly was the main factor.
“We’d spoken about our starts the two or three priors (to the last fortnight) but we’ve probably moved past that now with the way we started against Portland and Port Fairy but it was more about the way we movedthe ball.”
Gordon produced his fourth best on ground effort for the season, finishing with 10 goals after kicking seven in the first half.
His haul follows hauls of seven in rounds two and four, and nine in round nine, with the former Geelong Falcon currently leading the league’s goalkicking table with 43 majors.
Swayn was pleased Gordon continued his strong form up forward.
“Obviously it’s a great effort by Sam but I thought we moved the ball a lot better and our forward entries were a lot better than they have been before for him,” he said.
“It was good for him (to finish with 10 goals) but we have to give credit to all our onballers with the way they moved the ball and their entries into him.”
Swayn said Cameron Spence and Fraser Lucas as well as ruckman Will Rowbottom were also among his best players in the victory.
The Magpies have continued to train this week despite the scheduled bye, but will enjoy the weekend off ahead of its round 10 clash with Terang Mortlake at Leura Oval.
