TERANG skipper Tyson Hay admits his side’s first win of the South West Cricket cricket season was reward for effort.

The Goats upstaged Bookaar in a thriller at Terang Cricket Ground last Saturday, with Terang snaring a two run win after defending 8/211.

It helped create the perfect ending for what was a see-sawing contest, with numerous momentum swings giving neither side the upperhand.

The Pelicans opened the contest the better of the two sides, with three early wickets having Terang stumbling at 3/7 less than eight overs into the contest.

But Hay (102) and Tim Keane (80 not out) consolidated the home side’s innings and pushed it towards 250, before four late wickets restricted Terang to 8/211 from its 50 overs.

In reply, Bookaar was cruising at 3/155, before the Goats took 5/15 to have the Pelicans wailing at 8/170.

A 31 run partnership between Fraser Lucas (64) and Dom Cunningham (14 not out) got the Pelicans within 11 runs of victory before it was left to the latter and debutant Taj Podger to score the winning runs off the final 14 balls.

The Goats, however, stood up when needed, with Hay (2/28) and Brett Hunger (1/33) restricting to Bookaar to just eight runs off the final two overs, handing Terang its first win of the year.

Tim Keane (2/25) was also instrumental with the ball, while Sam Munro (3/38) was an important contributor.

Hay, who said he was thrilled to make his maiden century while playing his role for his club, was pleased his side got over the line.

“I know the boys were keen to test themselves against Bookaar,” he said.

“The first two or three games we were close (to breaking through) but the hard work just really paid off for the boys on Saturday.

“We were under the pump at 3/7 but I was sort of glad the boys really knuckled down there and we got the nail-biting win.

“It was good for the young boys to get their first win of the year.”

The Goats are now hoping to convert its first collection of points into a second victory against Camperdown this Saturday.

“I gave the group a goal at the end of the game that now we have our first we have to try and back it up every week,” Hay said.

“We want to try and keep that confidence going before the Christmas break and then after Christmas we’ll be looking to start all over again.”

Elsewhere, Mortlake extended its winning streak to four matches with a 93 run win over Noorat.

The Cats posted 6/229 on the back of half centuries to Isaac Wareham (66) and Todd Lamont (56) before it dismissed Noorat for 136.

Jacob Fishwick (61) top scored for the Steamrollers, while Will Kain collected 5/33 for the Cats.

Woorndoo suffered a second straight loss despite the batting heroics of Tyler Schafer.

The opening batter made an unbeaten 111 as the Tigers posted 8/190 but Cobden cruised to six wicket win in just 30 overs.

Pomborneit won the other contest, with the Bulls comfortably defeating Camperdown.

In this weekend’s matches, Mortlake hosts Bookaar, Heytesbury Rebels welcome Noorat and Cobden takes on Pomborneit.

Meanwhile, the semi-finals of South West Cricket’s Fonterra Cup will be staged tonight.

Mortlake will take on Heytesbury Rebels at Terang Cricket Ground, while Noorat and Cobden will square off at Camperdown’s S.A. Wright Oval.

Both matches start at 5.30pm.
