Heads shaved for a cause
HIGH Street became a hair salon as Sue Kull and Elijah Quick lopped off their long locks for a good cause.
HIGH Street became a hair salon as Sue Kull and Elijah Quick lopped off their long locks for a good cause.
The duo went under the clippers outside Terang Country Bakery last week for the Variety Hair with Heart program.
Hair with Heart is a hair donation program creating real-hair wigs for people who lost their hair due to long-term medical conditions such as cancer and alopecia.
Ms Kull said she decided to have her head shaved to support an organisation close toher heart.
“We chose Variety Australia because they use real hair for their wigs,” Ms Kull said.
“Variety Australia also helped out my son when he was young.
“They’re a really good charity.”
Terang’s Elijah Quick, 11, joined Ms Kull in her efforts after he heard about the fundraiser and wanted to show his support.
He had been growing his hair out for more than two years, and decided it was time fora change.
“When my hair got a bit further down my ears I realised I wanted to donate it,”Elijah said.
“I kept on debating it over and over, but I just made the decision to have it cut short again.
“So I kept growing it out. It feels good to be supporting a worthy cause.
“It is important to give back.”
Terang Style Studio hairdressers Anna McMaster and Julia Bettess donated their expertise for the cause, snipping away outside Terang Country Bakery.
“Bakery co-owner Gaye McVilly was all for me coming here for the cut because it’s so busy at lunch time, and she knew her customers would want to chip in with some donations,” Ms Kull said.
“So I’ve raised a couple of hundred online and collected another $30 in donations.”
The $30 total did not stand for long as Ms McVilly shook the tin for customers more than happy to rally around the cause, with the cash total rapidly rising to $204.60.
The cash was directly deposited to Ms Kull’s online fundraiser, which now stands at a total of $427 raised for Variety Australia.
The fundraiser remains open and those wanting to donate can visit https://hairwithheart.variety.org.au/fundraisers/suekull/hair-with-heart.
