This week in Heytesbury we have reached the pennant’s summit.

Last Wednesday at Timboon Sports Stadium the 2022 Heytesbury Indoor Bowls Season concluded with the Grand Final and even players from Indoor Bowls Warrnambool came down to watch all the live action.

We’ll start with the Division 1 semi-finals rematch, Timboon Lawn 2 (Jason Mungean(s), Noah Mungean, Ash Quick, Jacoba Mungean) v Timboon Lawn 1 (Brett Mungean(s), Arthur Finch, Dianne Finch, Pam Dwyer).

With no changes to both sides, this was going to be a hard fought battle.

Timboon Lawn 1 opened the match with a triple but Timboon Lawn 2 picked up a single on the next end to start their campaign.

Singles either way on ends three and four kept things tight and on end five, Timboon Lawn 2 were holding five shots and had jack surrounded.

But Timboon Lawn 1 skip Brett played his last bowl perfectly, coming into the pack and resting on jack to score a single and the team would also pick up another pair of singles to take the lead 7-2 after seven ends.

Timboon Lawn 2 started to feel left out so, started their run.

A quartet of singles on the next four ends meant that they were one behind, but kept scoring with a triple and another single on ends 12 and 13 to take the lead 10-7.

Timboon Lawn 1 then halted Timboon Lawn 2’s run with a pair of singles on the next two ends to reduce deficit to a single shot with three ends left to play.

Timboon Lawn 2 picked up a valuable double on end 16 but Timboon Lawn 1 matched that on the next end and with one end to play, Timboon Lawn 2 were still leading by one shot.

On the last end, Timboon Lawn 1 came in clutch and picked up a single that levelled the match at twelve all after 18 ends. But there must be a winner so, an extra end was played.

Timboon Lawn 2 won the toss and elected to give the mat away so they could have last bowl.

On the extra end, Timboon Lawn 2 Skip Jason tried to get the shot but narrowly missed, with Timboon Lawn 2 narrowly going down to Timboon Lawn 1, 12-13 after 19 ends.

Congratulations to the 2022 HIBBA Division 1 Premiers Timboon Lawn 1 and well done to the runners-up, Timboon Lawn 2.

The action from Division 2 was Glenormiston 1 (Max Heard(s), Bec Heard, Noel Ubergang, Jim Wallace) playing Glenormiston 2 (Ron Heard(s), Jenny Meade, Rita Pasque, Deb Cheslett) and both sides scored a pair of singles each in the first four ends of the match.

Singles either way changed little until Glenormiston 2 got a little run on, picking up a pair of doubles and a single on ends seven through nine to take the lead 8-3.

That was until tragedy struck on end ten when Glenormiston 1 third Bec took the jack off the mat but Glenormiston 1 managed a triple on the replay.

Singles to both teams on ends 11 & 12 again changed very little but progressed the match forward.

Glenormiston 2 applied the pressure and reaped the rewards on the next five ends, adding a further eleven shots to their score.

Glenormiston 1 then picked up a single on the last end, losing to Glenormiston 2, 8-23.

Congratulations to the 2022 HIBBA Division 2 Premiers Glenormiston 2 and well done to runners-up, Glenormiston 1 who are in finals again for a second year in a row, after they won the Division 3 Grand Final by one shot over Simpson 2 in an extra end.

Rounding out the action in Division 3 was Glenormiston 3 (Scott Pierce(s), Glen Heard, Anne Gready, Jim Forssman) playing Simpson 2 (Alan Beazy(s), Fred Salmon, Scott Ryan, Peita van Donk) and both sides started out with a single on the first two ends of the match.

Glenormiston 3 added four shots to their ledger on ends three through five, then Simpson 2 reciprocated with a double and a single on ends six and seven to trail by one shot on end seven.

Unfortunately for Glenormiston 3 Third Glen, end eight was one to forget after knocking the jack off the mat (despite bowls all around the jack) but managed a single on the replay.

Simpson 2 then applied the pressure and continued scoring with a double on end nine and a triple on the following end.

Glenormiston 3 kept trying and were rewarded with a double on end 11 and a single on end 12, trailing by three shots with six ends to play.

Simpson 2 kept applying the blowtorch, scoring six shots on ends 13 through 15 to take a healthy lead.

Try as Glenormiston 3 might, they could only score a pair of singles for the remainder of the match, losing to Simpson 2 11-20.

Congratulations to the 2022 HIBBA Division 3 Premiers Simpson 2 who have been in finals for the third year in a row and well done to Glenormiston 3.

That concludes the 2022 HIBBA Pennant Season and what a season it was – Glenormiston had all four teams make the finals, Timboon Lawn 1 & 2 played each other in both finals, Simpson 2 advances to Division 2 after the third season in a row in Grand Finals and Peterborough made the finals for the first time since joining Heytesbury.

The 2023 season should be an interesting, but you’ll have to wait about eight months to see how that pans out.

The next event on the Heytesbury calendar is the Association Pairs this Wednesday at Timboon Lawn.

These teams start at 7pm: Cobden – David Childs and Jeff Hester v Timboon Lawn – Pam Dwyer and Jean Clover; Scotts Creek – Allen Armistead and Joyce Lindquist v Glenormiston – Scott Pierce and David Ham.

The winner of Cobden v Timboon Lawn will play Camperdown – Gary Body, Kelvin Rundle and the winner of Scotts Creek v Glenormiston will play Simpson – Gary Langenhuizen, Harvey Robbins.

Good luck to all the teams and we’ll bring you the action here next week.
