Hickey awarded life membership
CAMPERDOWN Turf Club awarded Life Membership honours to a club stalwart last Monday evening.
Laurie Hickey received his badge from fellow life members Ron Cameron and Dennis Mahony at the club’s monthly committee meeting.
Upon receiving the award, Mr Hickey reflected on an involvement spanning 23 years, with 13 of those years served as the president of the club.
“The journey started with then President Bob Case explaining that a committee role would not take up much time at all,” Mr Hickey said.
“That was a little underestimated, I would have to say, by any means of measurement.”
He said he was proud to step away from the club with its infrastructure in great condition, a well-regarded venue for racing, trials and training, and with a strong financial position.
“There were many highlights that comes to mind, however, being awarded 2018 Country Racing Victoria Event of the Year in Melbourne for our 150th Camperdown Cup was up there with the greatest,” he said.
“Over the years, special guests have thrilled the crowds with their attendances, the spectacular Fashions on the Field, the entertaining Eat Bull - Talk Bull competition, live music and quality hospitality all flood to mind when reminiscing.
“Oh and the year the track was flooded brought a response from all parts of the community. The effort to shift our event, complete with over 80 umbrellas and marquees, to Terang was overwhelming.
“Community connectivity is a pretty important component to the success of the one meeting club to maintain its viability.”
Mr Hickey thanked his wife Annette and family for their support and significant contributions offered over the years, adding they are a proud part of this award as well.
“To serve a Turf Club with such a rich history, especially with all the wonderful committee, staff and friends has been a privilege and an honour,” he said.
