TIMBOON Demons have turned to a favourite son to lead their senior football team in 2019.

Star big man Marcus Hickey will take on job as coach, replacing outgoing mentor Mick Hunt, who stood down following the club’s semi-final loss last year.

A statement released by the club said their “decision to appoint a home grown senior football coach displays the faith the club has in our own talent and commitment to nurturing and developing our players and coaches”.

“The Timboon Demons Football Netball Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Marcus Hickey as our senior football coach in 2019,” the statement read.

“Marcus ‘Barney’ Hickey has played 165 senior games at Timboon and has been an integral part of the club for many years.

“The mercurial ruckman will turn 28 a couple of weeks out from season 2019 and brings to the senior coaching role a wealth of playing experience and natural leadership skills.

“Barney is a positive role model and is highly regarded as both a player and a mentor.”

The Demons have played finals in each of the last two seasons, but have failed to capitalise on their top five finishes.

In both years, the side has won the elimination finals but succumbed to defeat in the semi-final stages, losing to Nirranda in 2017 and Kolora Noorat in 2018 respectively.

In a further bid to play finals regularly on both the football field and netball courts, the Demons have installed a new coaching department that incorporates all coaches within the club.

“We have created a new coaching department that includes all coaches at every level in both football and netball,” the statement read.

“This will help to ensure the best possible support, mentoring, learning opportunities and skill development of both players and coaches.”

The Demons’ season starts on March 30 with a home match against Panmure, which will coincide with a ‘Community Family Fun Day’.

The fun day will include live music, kids’ activities and a barbecue, while the inaugural Timboon men’s and women’s 100 metre sprints will be held at half-time of the main game.
