High scores, helping others
MORTLAKE College 2022 Dux Katy Jarvie hopes her fantastic results will help her build a career helping others.
MORTLAKE College 2022 Dux Katy Jarvie hopes her fantastic results will help her build a career helping others.
Ms Jarvie was named Mortlake College 2022 Dux this week with an ATAR score of 89.2.
“I’m feeling pretty good, pretty proud of myself,” she said.
“I had taken two of the Year 12 subjects last year in Year 11, so I only had to do four subjects this year which relieved some of the pressure on my studies.
“That gave me more time at school to study, so I worked really hard while I was at school, and tried as hard as I could to separate school as much as I could from home.
“I found at home I could not be as productive so I thought my time would be best used at school, and I could brush up at home where needed.”
Ms Jarvie said her approach to learning had been shaped during COVID-19 lockdowns, which she found difficult.
“At home there were a lot of distractions, so it wasn’t a great environment to work hard in,” she said.
“I was happy to come back to school this year.”
Being named Dux was a proud moment for Ms Jarvie, and so too for her family.
“Mum was in tears,” she said.
“I originally told her my score and she said “Oh my goodness, that’s so good” and then I told her I was also Dux and she started crying.
“She was so happy, and it was great to have that support.”
Ms Jarvie now hopes to land a spot at Deakin University to follow her ambition of helping others.
“I hope to study a Bachelor of Social Work because I like helping people,” she said.
“I think a lot of people are at a disadvantage and don’t always have the support network they need, so that kind of field would be really good for me.”
Her advice to students hoping to achieve high results was a simple but tried and tested approach.
“I think having a school and life balance is really important, but if you want to get a really good score you have to put the work in,” she said.
“It’s difficult and it isn’t always easy, but if you want to get a good score you have to stay dedicated to achieving it.
“It is important to still have your hobbies, work or do things outside of school that you really like but you also have to put the work in.”
