MEMBER for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney paid a visit to the Camperdown and District Historical Society.
Society member Gillian Senior said Ms Tierney visited the Heritage Centre recently to meet members and discuss how the grant of $5024 was to be used.
“She was very interested to see the bound copies of the Western Press which were to be sent to the State Library for digitising and promised she would return one day to spend more time browsing the exhibitions and the research facilities at the centre,” she said.
“Almost every historian these days relies heavily on Trove and its online library of digitised newspapers for research into our past.
“Over the years, more and more newspapers are being digitised to make them available to people from all over the world.”
Ms Senior said the Camperdown and District Historical Society has for many years been the custodian of copies of the earliest newspaper published in Camperdown – the Western Press.
“Now, through receiving a grant from the State Government, the opportunity has now arrived to have these copies digitised by the team at the State Library of Victoria,” she said.
