Home court win beckons
CAMPERDOWN’S open grade netballers have their sights set on a home court win this weekend.
CAMPERDOWN’S open grade netballers have their sights set on a home court win this weekend.
With just three wins to their name after 12 rounds, the Magpies are currently sitting in eighth on the Hampden league ladder.
They will host seventh-placed Portland tomorrow in a game that could see the Magpies move up a position if they can come away with the four points.
Senior coach Leah Sinnott is hoping her team can repeat its round four performance when they defeated the Seagulls by 13 goals, 55-42.
“We may be lacking wins on the board but we’re certainly not lacking commitment or self-belief,” Sinnott said.
“I have full confidence in the girls. If they bring their A game on Saturday they can win again."
“Although we were beaten 42-53 by Cobden last weekend I was happy with how they all played and how they managed to hold on.”
Sinnott paid credit to the second-placed Bombers, saying they are a quality side that are real contenders come September.
“We always have a great game against Cobden and last weekend was no different,” Sinnott said.
“The rain came down hard in the second quarter and the game got pretty scrappy, with lots of silly errors from both sides."
“At the start of the season we were dropping off as games went on but now we are really starting to work hard for the full four quarters which is pleasing.”
Managing junior players has also become somewhat of a challenge for the coach, with anywhere up to three juniors being called on each week to also play seniors.
“These juniors are really stepping up and playing good netball but we need to really be careful of their game time and manage that wisely,” Sinnott said.
“But in saying that, having them play regular senior netball is good for their skills and also good for the future of the club.”
Chelsea Baker, Sophie Conheady and Lily Eldridge were name among the Magpies’ best last Saturday.
In what proved to be a tough day on the Cobden courts last weekend, the Magpies were defeated in all senior games played.
Division one went down 18-55 (best players Chloe O’Brien and Brodie Humphrey); division two lost 29-38 (Ava Nolan, Jessica Van den Eynde and Kirby Stonehouse named best on court) and division three was defeated 25-26 (Melanie Van den Eynde and Airlee Cole named best).
Junior results were as follows:
17 and under – lost 36-57 (best on court Sophie Conheady and Mary Place).
17 and under reserves – lost 18-39.
15 and under – lost 15-22.
15 and under reserves – won 15-14.
13 and under – lost 30-34.
13 and under reserves – won 20-17.
