Icon to open for a good cause
ONE of the most iconic homes in south west Victoria will open its gates for a good cause this month.
The Terang Hospital Auxiliary will be hosting an open garden at Glenormiston’s famed Dalvui Homestead, widely considered one of the nation’s most noted rural properties.
The historic homestead, located at 182 Mackinnons Bridge Road, offers sprawling gardens designed in 1898 by the acclaimed William Guilfoyle.
Terang Hospital Auxiliary president Bernadette McKinnon said the occasion provides a rare opportunity to tour a piece of the region’s history while helping at auxiliary raise funds to purchase new equipment for the hospital.
“We’ll have an open day for the garden with live classical music throughout the day including a clarinettist and flautist,” she said.
“The garden has been meticulously maintained in the Guilfoyle tradition, so we’re excited to share the garden with the public while raising money for the hospital.
“We’ve held open gardens at the homestead previously but it hasn’t been open to the public for a very long time.
“It’s quite exciting to be able to return.”
The Terang Hospital Auxiliary will host the open garden at Dalvui Homestead next Sunday, September 22, from 10am to 4pm.
Entrance will be $10 with a $5 afternoon tea, while raffle tickets will also be available to go in to the draw for a gardening package.
“The raffle is valued at $100 and features a gardening package,” Mrs McKinnon said.
All funds raised from the open garden will be used to support the ongoing work the Terang Hospital Auxiliary in its mission to help Terang and Mortlake Health Service purchase new equipment.
“It’s all in aid of the hospital,” Mrs McKinnon said.
“The hospital is looking to purchase a new blood fridge and simulation equipment.”
Mrs McKinnon offered her thanks to the Conn family for allowing the auxiliary to host the open garden.
“They were more than happy to open it for the hospital,” she said.
