“It’s just the beginning”
CORANGAMITE Art Exposed was officially opened last Thursday, allowing local artists who were otherwise hidden to show off their talents to the wider community.
The opening night provided artists and the community an opportunity to mingle and discuss their works with champagne and nibbles.
Local artist and exhibition organiser Isha Paasse said the overall celebration was “really excellent”.
“We really enjoyed an evening of bubbly and lovely nibbles, and I will say that, amongst us, were artists that never exhibited or were really nervous about,” she said.
“It was really positive in regards in regard to our new mayor coming along and embracing it as she did.
“Her enthusiasm and willingness to cooperate with future art events was noted.
“That was, to me, really important because it’s about all of our community and all of the Corangamite creatives.”
Ms Paasse said it was because of the Courthouse Camperdown providing the space that local artists of varying skill levels were able to participate in the arts community of Corangamite.
“For me, personally, because I set up this Facebook group to try and capture artists that are hidden as well as those that attend groups, it was brilliant that the amount of people that came up to me and were just so grateful for the opportunity,” she said.
“Years ago, when I came to Camperdown, I was a new artist. I had no confidence, and it was because of putting my art in a café, and it all sold, it gave me confidence and improved my health.
“It was amazing how it impacted on my wellbeing in a positive manner.
“The community visiting the courthouse, which they are doing, the community doing that and considering purchasing some really affordable art can really make a person grow and feel worthwhile.”
Ms Paasse said she had received feedback that many people were stopping by the Courthouse because of the art on display.
“Apparently, there’s a 30 per cent increase of people at the courthouse because of the art exhibitions,” she said.
“The community have come on board in a lovely way, and we really value that.
“I’m just spreading the word about how art is so good for people; it’s such a healer.”
Ms Paase said, where it not for the community’s interest in art, she would not have continued in the field of art.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the community; if it wasn’t for them taking interest in my art when I was a beginner, and buying my art, I don’t think I ever would have prospered in the art world,” she said.
“We’re grateful for the opportunity for the opportunity of the Courthouse, but we’re also grateful for our community for showing their interest and coming in.”
Artworks on display during the opening are still available for purchase from the Courthouse Camperdown at 179 Manifold Street, Camperdown for the month of February.
