POSTIE Lud Gungl is hanging up his helmet after close to 38 years delivering letters and parcels to households.

While wrapping up in Camperdown, Mr Gungl had previously worked in Box Hill in Melbourne and Terang.

Mr Gungl began working as a postie in 1981 after growing up in Melbourne with his wife June.

The pair moved to Camperdown in 1983.

Mr Gungl said he found a job at the Post Office after trying a variety of other jobs.

“I got out and about for about five years full time,” he said.

“I went to Terang as a postie for 14 years part-time. Then I retired again; after six months, they wanted me back again.

“There was a vacancy in Camperdown, so I worked in Camperdown since.

“I’ve been in the system off and on for about 38 years.”

When reflecting on his service, Mr Gungl said things used to be busy when it came to letters.

“We used to do an average of three to four thousand letters a day, and that’s changed completely nowadays,” he said.

“It’s the other way around; we do probably around 60-70 packets and parcels compared to the letters, where we only get three to four hundred a day.

“It’s changed mostly due to the technology. There’s SMS, emails, everything like that. People don’t get cheques in the mail anymore; it goes straight into the bank accounts.”

Mr Gungl said he’ll miss seeing many of the people he has met during his daily rounds.

“I’ve always been a postie,” he said.

“The good part of the job is meeting all the people.

“I’ll miss seeing them on the rounds every day, the ones that get out and about.

“Hopefully their service will still be the same, and they’ll get goods service from the next postie that comes along.”
