MORTLAKE’S Jesse Fowler enjoyed valuable court-time alongside his Vic Country team-mates at the Southern Cross Championships last month.

The talented young basketballer was part of the 20-member 14 and under squad for the championships, which were held at the State Basketball Centre from January 19-23.

Despite being a bottom-aged player, the 12 year-old held his own on the court, contributing well during each of his side’s seven games.

The Vic Country side had just three training sessions together as a team prior to the tournament but managed to perform incredibly well to reach the grand final.

They played seven games across the four days; defeating SA Metro Red by four points, the ACT by 45, NSW Metro by 11 and SA Country by 53.

They lost to Vic Metro Navy by 23 points before going on to defeat SA Metro Blue by 12 points in the semi-final; earning a place in the grand final where they once again met Vic Metro Navy.

Despite leading in each quarter, the Vic Country boys couldn’t quite finish off and went down by 12 points.

Jesse played his role well, scoring in five of the seven games and is now motivated to continue training hard in the hope of again representing Vic Country in the near future.

Jesse has been playing basketball with the Terang Tornadoes since the age of eight and is thankful to the club for providing a pathway towards state selection – and for the valuable coaching from Michael Payne and Stephen Vaughn
