TALENTED basketballer Jesse Fowler will represent Vic Country at next January’s Southern Cross Championships.

The 12 year-old Mortlake College student was named in the 20-member 14 and under squad after a lengthy selection process.

He will head to the State Basketball Centre for the January 19-23 tournament as a bottom-aged player but is excited about the challenge ahead.

“The selections have been really good; I just love playing basketball,” Jesse said.

“I’m really excited to be representing Vic Country and playing at the State Basketball Centre will be fun.”

Jesse, who has been playing basketball with the Terang Tornadoes since the age of eight, underwent a challengingselection process in the lead-up to the team’s recentannouncement.

According to proud mum Liz, Jesse’s path to selection began back in January this year.

“Jesse went to a skills day in Hamilton with about 150 or so other kids and from that several of them were selected for the academy program,” Liz said.

“He then spent a couple of hours every Friday night at training sessions in Warrnambool for three or four months and from that they chose a smaller group to attend what they call the Gold Nugget Camp in Ballarat.”

The camp, held over the recent September school holidays, was enjoyed by more than 100 young hopefuls who were keen to represent Vic Country.

“A squad of 20 (and I think they will divide that into teams of 10) was then chosen for the January championships,” Liz said.

“We’re really proud of Jesse’s selection; I’m sure the whole experience will be a great one for him in Melbourne.”
