Karate success
AFTER two years of lockdowns, last Sunday week’s karate tournament at the Warrnambool stadium was a welcome return for local athletes.

AFTER two years of lockdowns, last Sunday week’s karate tournament at the Warrnambool stadium was a welcome return for local athletes.
The 25th annual Funakoshi Karate International Australia tournament attracted competitors from Melbourne and South Australia.
Held in partnership with Karate Victoria and the Australian Karate Federation, the event attracted the support of 24 judges and officials.
Results from the Camperdown and Terang Dojos were as follows:
Jill Cole – 1st veterans’ female black belt kata, 2nd open female black belt kata.
Chelsea Wright – 3rd female black belt 14yr-15yr kata.
Josh Wilkins – 1st male 10thKuy, 7thKyu points sparring, 1st male veterans’ 10thKyu, 7thKyu kata, 2nd male veteran’s points sparring.
Mark Cole – 3rd male 10th Kyu-7Kyu points sparring, 2nd male 10th Kuy-7thKyu kata.
Sophie Quarrell-Cole – 2nd female 10th Kuy-7th Kyu 6yr-7yr points sparring, 3rd female 10th Kuy-7th kyu kata.
Trent Waixel – 2nd male 10th Kyu – 7th Kyu kata, 2nd male 10th kuy-7th Kyu points sparring.
Rebecca Biddle – 1st all abilities kata.
Rowan Stephens – equal 3rd all abilities kata.
David Howe – equal 3rd all abilities kata.
Funakoshi Karate’s international tournament squad also brought home a swag of medals from this year’s state titles.
The team recently competed at the National All Styles State Championships at Doncaster, enjoying success across a range of categories.
Jill Cole added to her medal collection with a first in both the veteran kata and veteran continuous events, silver in open black belt kata, open age black belt continuous mark and novice kata, and bronze in open age black belt point sparring and novice point.
Mark Cole also performed well at the championships, bringing home a silver medal in novice kata and a bronze in novice point.
In the team kata division Jill Cole, Tobi Cole and Chelsea Wright performed well to finish with a bronze medal.
Chelsea also finished third in the 14-15 years forms category.
