COBDEN’S division one side is holding on to its top four spot following a 91-run win over Terang last weekend.

The Knights have their sights set on a finals berth this season after finishing out of the four last year but captain Simon Murfett said his team would need to “dig deep” and focus on getting more runs on the board to be a realistic chance of playing on the big day.

“At the moment we’re playing really well in the field, our bowlers are doing a great job and our fielding is also strong but unfortunately our batting is letting us down a little,” Murfett said.

“We really need to bat out the full 50 overs and we’re not yet doing that. I have faith in our side and know we can do it, we just need to get more runs on the board.”

Batting first on their home ground last Saturday, the Knights managed 148 – a figure Murfett was not “totally comfortable” with.

“Ideally we need to be looking at around 180 or so to be really competitive, but in saying that I knew we had the ability with the ball,” he said.

“And we got the job done; in the end we had them (Terang) bowled out in the 19th over which was pleasing.”

Defending 148 runs, Cobden had the Goats at 9/57 at the end of play.

Angus Uwland 33, Damon Delaney 24 and Matthew Boyle 20 were the best of the Cobden batsmen while Murfett led the bowling attack with figures of 5/14 off 10, with Uwland finishing the day with 4/30 off his 6.4.

“Our game was played under lights as part of our annual ladies appreciation day with Terang,” Murfett said.

“We always have good rivalry with them on the field, and good friendships off it. Traditionally the ladies day is well supported and last weekend we hosted 40 or 50 ladies who all seemed to have had a lovely evening.”

In division two, Cobden continued its winning streak for the day, defeating Princetwon by 40 runs – 149 to 104.

Opening batsman Ashley Rosolin contributed 44 for the Knights while captain Michael Pegg added 37 and Josh Hickey 12.

Best bowling figures came from Luke Pekin with 4/16 off 8.1 and Pegg 3/15 off 4.2.

Division three made it a clean sweep for the Knights, defeating Terang by three wickets.

Opener Jia Anderson was a standout with the bat, contributing 64 for the Knights and was well supported by Leigh Walsh with 31 not out.

Billy Roberts took 2/6 off his three overs.
