Lakers record crucial Western District bowls victory
MORTLAKE Blue recorded a timely Western District bowls victory last Saturday.

MORTLAKE Blue recorded a timely Western District bowls victory last Saturday.
The Lakers defeated Port Fairy Red 71-51 to break a two match losing streak and move to seventh on the ladder
Skippers George Draffen and Darren Grant defeated Robert Mallett 32-13 and Steven Gibb 25-14 respectively, with their victories covering Dave McNicoll’s 24-14 loss to Paul Bentham.
Grant said the triumph was “confidence boosting” for his side.
“It was a much-needed win,” he said.
“Hopefully it stabilizes us and sets us on the right track for the rest of the year.”
A fast start from Draffen’s and Grant’s rinks paved the way for the Lakers to record the victory despite McNicoll’s loss.
The early lead enabled Mortlake to steadily apply pressure, which resulted in a comfortable.
“George’s rink flew out of the blocks and held a comfortable lead for the whole game which was pleasing to see for George and his blokes,” Grant said.
“My rink was similar, we started well and got a good lead on the opposition and were then able to hold that for the rest of the game.
“Dave’s rink was 10-0 down at the start but they were just able to hold on and maintain the deficit.
“But George’s rink really set up a good overall win by having a good win themselves.”
In other results, City Red accounted for Koroit Blue 68-47, Dunkeld upstaged City Gold 71-58 and Warrnambool Blue upset Timboon Gold 57-54.
This week’s matches see Warrnambool Gold hosting Dunkeld, Port Fairy Red challenging City Red and Koroit Blue hosting Warrnambool Blue.
Mortlake Blue hits the road for a tough away trip to face City Gold.
“It’s a good situation to be clear of the bottom of the ladder but we now have City Gold down at City,” Grant said.
“That’ll be hard work as they’ve been a good side this year but they lost to Dunkeld which has shown a bit of a chink in their armour which gives us a bit confidence that we can beat them.
“We do have George Draffen out, so unfortunately we’re down one of our best players.
“We’re still shuffling our rinks around, a lot of that because of George’s absence but also to still try a few different combinations.”
