LISMORE mother and son Cathy and Jake Burleigh are clocking up more than a lap or two in the pool this month.

Mrs Burley said the pair has signed up to take part in the Starlight Super Swim, which is a fundraising initiative for sick children across the country.

“We’ve said we would swim 40 kilometres each this month,” she said.

“We’re getting fit and we’re doing something fun together as a mum and son.”

Mrs Burleigh said Jake, who is 13, is a keen swimmer.

“My son loves swimming, I wanted to get fit and I decided to swim alongside him.

“I happened to come across it (Starlight Super Swim) and it really appealed to me.

“We’ve all recently experienced periods of uncertainty and social isolation, and children and families who manage serious illness face this every day.

“We’re fundraising to bring happiness to sick kids when it matters most, and it would mean so much to us if others would support our challenge.”

Starlight Children’s Foundation is encouraging Australians around the country to dive in and make a splash for sick kids for its fourth annual Super Swim Challenge.

Throughout February, the virtual swim challenge will aim to raise $3 million to help deliver happiness to more than 76,000sick kids.

Regardless of age and fitness level, all participants are welcome. By completing a swim at a location of their choice, participants will raise funds to support Starlight’s vital in-hospital services including Captain Starlight and Starlight Express Rooms nationally.

Ms Burleigh said the community had offered its support with positive feedback and donations being received.

“The Lismore pool community and the wider community have been amazing,” she said.

The Lismore pair – who have dubbed themselves the Titanic Swimteam – has raised more than $1000.
