HAVE you ever wanted to give sailing a try?

The Derrinallum Yacht and Power Boat Club will, for the second consecutive year, host the Yachting Western Victoria ‘Learn to Sail’ weekend next month.

The event will be held at Derrinallum’s Deep Lake on January 21 and 22.

Australian Sailing promotes all areas of learn to sail programs, with tackers through to adults catered for.

The January weekend will include activities and programs designed for all ages and abilities.

Participants will have the chance to learn the basics of sailing, from rigging a yacht and learning how wind powers a yacht, through to getting on the water with a qualified sailor or instructor.

Last year the Derrinallum club hosted over 15 yachts and beginners from Geelong right through to Portland, with clubs such as Colac, Portland, Warrnambool, Stawell, Port Fairy and Geelong involved.

The training is centred around having fun while learning to right a yacht after capsizing.

The weekend will be fully catered for by club members with lunches, a dinner Saturday night and breakfast/lunch on the Sunday.

All participants will receive a completion of the Australian ‘Learn to Sail’ program certificate, with encouragement to join a local club and continue sailing.

Anyone wanting more information on the event can contact Fiona Noone on 0455 503 802.

“For those who cannot attend the weekend but would like to give sailing a go, we can also arrange another time for them to visit and try this fantastic sport,” Fiona said.
