COBDEN Football Netball Club (CFNC) had a bright spot in the middle of a difficult last week when it named club legend Les Sumner the number one ticket holderfor 2022.

Sumner has a long history with CFNC, becoming a member in 1950, playing junior football and winning a premiership with Cobden, before becoming a trainer for the club in 1974, a role which he has maintainedever since.

Sumner was awarded a life membership in 1995, but club president Darren Mounsey said he and other committee members were surprised to discover that Sumner had never been named number one ticket holder.

“Les has been recognised for his involvement with the club with other things, but it was brought to our attention that he hadn’t been the number one ticket holder,” Mounsey said.

“I thought he had, but when we found out he hadn’t we thought we’d better remedy that.”

In addition to his seven decades of involvement with CFNC, Sumner has been a pillar of the Cobden community, receiving an Order of Australia Medal in 2019 for his service to the wider Cobden area.

Mounsey said the club was honoured to have a man like Les involved with the organisation for so many years.

“We’re very proud of Les, he’s a pretty special fella for us,” he said.

“If you’re lucky you have those sort of people at your club that are always around; you look around, andhe’s there.

“He’s very unassuming, a quiet man who enjoys a laugh, very friendly, just a very loyal member of our club.”
