STUDENTS at Derrinallum P-12 College marked International Women’s Day with a special morning presentation on Wednesday.
Guest speakers Judi Oakes and Erin Noone spoke about their lives, expectations of being a woman, and the challenges and stereotypes they faced.
Principal Caitlyn Fitzgerald said there were many people that were engaged with the stories, and taken back by Erin Noone’s vulnerability when speaking of her experiences.
“To see the vulnerability of Erin sharing her point of view and her story, and how her day-to-day life is affected by challenges she’s faced; I think it’s good for the students to see another side of Erin because she’s very professional at school,” she said.
A morning tea was provided to parents, staff and students afterwards.
Ms Fitzgerald said she hopes students see the value in the role women play in society, and that they may challenge stereotypes they see.
“Our younger students are really good at not seeing the gender stereotypes, but perhaps our older students might revert to thinking about women as in their mum’s at home playing the more traditional role,” she said.
“We want them to see more of an equality and equity in the world, and start to view women and men as equals across all factors of life, not just in the workplace.”
