Lions prepare for upcoming season

WITH the cricket season fast approaching, Noorat Terang Cricket Club has begun its pre-season training with an indoor hit at Mortlake.

Over the next few weeks the club will train on Monday’s, alternating between Mortlake (September 23 from 6pm-8pm) and Warrnambool (September 16, 7pm-8pm).

A practice match has also been organised, which will be played at Noorat against Birregurra prior to the first round.

For the top grade team, the season will consist of both one day and two-day games and will start on October 15.

This season there will only be eight teams in this division (with the other two divisions to compete in one-day games throughout the season).

The club has recently appointed Liam Geary and Stevie O’Connor to lead its top side while Liam Venn and Martin Wynd will take the reigns in division two.

Jack Kenna will continue his leadership role in division three, with support from Toby Roberts.

This season the Lions will welcome back former players Tyson Hay, Dom Moloney and Harry Schrama, as well as Isaac Kenna and Charlie Scanlon (who will return from injury).

In addition, 19-year-old Isaac Toombs will arrive from England later this month.

Season 2024/25 will see a number of players achieve personal milestones, with Tim Keane currently sitting on 395 games, Dave Conheady 246, Martin Wynd 197, Stevie O’Connor 189, Dom Kenna 183, Tyson Hay 148 and Dean Abbott 146.

In addition, five others are likely to achieve their 100th game.

The club was thrilled to recently announce its junior coaches for the upcoming Warrnambool Moyne and District Cricket Association season.

The under 15s mixed team will be led by international recruit Isaac Toombs and Australian representative in the national deaf team, Tyson Hay.

Under 15 matches will be played each Friday afternoon during the school term and will consist of oneand two-day games.

The Lion’s under 13s will be coached by John Clarke and Tom Conheady, with games scheduled for Saturday mornings.

All under 15 players are encouraged to train with the seniors on Monday nights while further details about training for other juniors will be announced shortly.

The club is also seeking players and volunteers interested in helping to establish an under 11s side.

This will be a modified game played on Sunday mornings, commencing in November (contact the club through its social pages).

The club congratulates one of its juniors, Lucia Clarke, who is currently trying out for a spot in the Western Waves and the Marg Jennings under 15 Premier League Geelong team.

Lucia played one senior game with her father last season and is hoping to play more games this season.
