Literature inspires creative costumes

STUDENTS from across the region dressed up to express their love of reading last week.
Students at Noorat Primary School and St Colman’s Primary School were among the students to enjoy a week of celebrating and embracing their love of literature.
The theme for Book Week 2023 was ‘Read. Grow. Inspire’ to celebrate the importance of reading.
Noorat Primary School principal Ilona Watkins praised students for the dedication they had put in to their costumes this year.
“We love Book Week; it’s a bit of fun for everyone, and so many of the kids plan their outfits in advance so the excitement builds up as to who is going to come dressed as what,” she said.
“It’s a great day to celebrate literacy and all of the books our students read.”
This year the six schools covered by the Mobile Area Resource Centre (MARC) mobile library van put a local touch on Book Week celebrations.
“We were a little bit different where our Mobile Area Resource Centre (MARC) van schools had their own voting system to draw attention to their favourite books,” Mrs Watkins said.
“We didn’t go with the Children’s Book Council of Australia awards, we had our own MARC Van book awards across our six schools.
“All of the books were the kid’s favourites that they have borrowed from the MARC Van during the year.”
Mrs Watkins said literacy was an important aspect of education which Noorat Primary School students had embraced.
“They love when Ms (Chris) Howlett (MARC library teacher) visits every Wednesday with the van full of all of the new books,” she said.
“The students borrow books every week. There’s always something for everyone, whatever they like reading from cartoons to novels or picture books.
“There’s everything you can imagine, and if we don’t have it Ms Howlett will get it in.
“Our students love reading, and we celebrate it as a school.”
