Honour: Ross and Andrew Powell, who died trying to rescue a person in strong surf in 2019 were recognised with a Governor General’s Australian Bravery Award last week.

Ross ‘Po’ Powell and son Andrew Powell were announced as recipients of the Governor General’s Australian Bravery Award last week.

The father and son duo were two of three Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club members paged to attend a rescue at about 11am on Easter Sunday in 2019.

Rough conditions coupled with the boat they were on losing power saw the three first responders thrown into the water.

The Powell’s lost their lives in the rescue attempt, with the third lifeguard being rescued by helicopter with significant injuries.

Ross’s daughter and Andrew’s sister Natalie Powell said the award brought their “family great comfort that their effort hasn’t been forgotten”.

“It’s an honour to have them recognised by the Governor General,” she said.

“It was certainly a surprise, but an honour to know they are being remembered.”

Ms Powell said the pair were passionate about volunteering in the local community, particularly with the Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club.

“Dad and Andy were selfless and courage in attempting the rescue… they were determined to help; but unfortunately, it came at a great cost,” she said.

“That’s just the people they were. They contributed decades of service to the community.

“It would be great to see more people stepping up and volunteering in their memory.”

Governor General Sam Moyston announced the more than 40 recipients of the award.

“I would like to congratulate today’s recipients of Australian Bravery Decorations,” the Governor General said.

“Australian Bravery Decorations honour those Australians who put themselves in danger to protect the lives or property of others.

“Recipients come from different parts of our country and diverse backgrounds. They are connected by their selfless, courageous, resilient and determined response in extraordinary circumstances.”

The Governor General said each of the recipients was inspiring.

“I am delighted that these exception people will forever know they have earned the gratitude of every Australian,” the Governor General said.

“On behalf of all Australians, congratulations to you all and thank you for your bravery.”
