YEARS of advocacy from residents of Waters Lane in Mortlake have finally borne fruit.
During its Ordinary Meeting this week, the Moyne Shire Council approved a contribution of $115,000 towards sealing the road.
Waters Lane residents have called for council to look into sealing the road for a number of years, with concerns raised in relation to health issues due to the prevalence of dust near the road.
The length of the proposed sealing would be 885 metres, at a seal width of 6.5 metres with 50 centimetre shoulders.
Initial cost projections estimated the total project would cost $235,000.
Under the proposal from Earth and Water Technologies, it would cover $120,000 through plant and labour costs, while council would have to allocate $115,000 for materials and sealing costs.
Shire director of infrastructure and environment Trevor Greenberger said the review of council’s policy on the construction and sealing of unsealed roads allowed for council’s contribution.
“The previous policy required adjoining residents to fully fund the construction and sealing of unsealed roads,” he said.
“The revised policy provides an opportunity for council to fund up to 50 per cent of the works depending on its determination of community value.”
