Low rainfall continues

LOW rainfall continued throughout the south west during August, with Mortlake experiencing half of its monthly average rainfall and Terang sitting at almost one third.

Not a drop was recorded during the first half of August over Terang, which is historically the wettest month of the year.

Ongoing rain events later in the month helped to spike the final tally, but just 34.4mm of rain was recorded to have hit the ground – well below the long-term average monthly total of 91.5mm.

The highest daily rainfall was recorded on August 21, when 6mm hit the ground.

The tally followed a similar trend to the previous year, when just 36.8mm of rain was recorded over Terang in August 2023.

Though to August, Terang has experienced 351.8mm of rainfall in 2024.

Meanwhile in Mortlake, a total of 30.8mm of rain was recorded to have hit the ground through August.

The figure was well below the long-term monthly average of 64.2mm, with the highest daily rainfall occurring on August 17 when 6mm of rain fell.

The figure was not dissimilar to the August 2023 result, when 28mm was recorded during the month with a highest daily rainfall of 9.6mm.

The result brings the 2024 tally to date in Mortlake to 289.6mm.
