THE drought has been broken.

After seven consecutive defeats, the Magpies have finally tasted success.

And the long-awaited victory has no doubt been hailed the upset of the round, with a 26-point win over third-placed Portland under lights at Leura Oval.

Senior coach Neville Swayn praised the efforts of all who took the field on Saturday night, saying it was a great team effort with everyone “playing their role.”

“It was a great team effort and a nice reward for all the boys who have never dropped off their training or lacked commitment,” Swayn said.

“It’s certainly nice to take the win from a top three side; it gives our blokes some added self-belief.

“It was good to string four quarters together and I think that was the most pleasing part. We’re now looking forward to the remaining five rounds and hopefully we can get a couple more scalps along the way.”

While reluctant to single out players in what was a “great team effort” Swayn made mention of Sam Gordon who “bagged five goals” and Hamish Sinnott, a quality on-baller who created a lot of run for the Pies and was consistent with his clearance work.

Final scores were Camperdown 13.10.88 defeated Portland 9.8.62.

Goal kickers for the Pies were Sam Gordon (5), Hamish Sinnott (2), Isaac Stephens (2), Tim Fitzgerald, Zach Sinnott, James O’Neil and Thomas Baker.

Among the best were Hamish Sinnott, Charlie Lucas, Sam Gordon, Zach Sinnott, Joshua Place and Ethan Coates.

Last Saturday night’s victory was even sweeter for senior debutant Thomas Baker.

The 15-year-old, enjoying his first senior game for the Pies, kicked a goal and earned the praises of team-mates and his coach.

“Thomas slotted well into our forward line with his pace and agility,” Swayn said.

“He had several impressive games in the under 16s and went well in the reserves, before earning his spot inthe seniors.”

Baker was presented with his jumper on Saturday by club legend and former president Peter ‘Chester’ Reily.

In the reserves, Camperdown lost to Portland 6.6.42 to 7.9.51.

Best for the Pies were Nick Jones, Eddie Lucas, Devon Coates, Dominic Absalom, Leigh Ball and Luke Ball.

Goal kickers were Luke Ball (2), Connor Jackson (2), Lachlan Swayn and Nick Jones.
