Magpies soar at Leura
CAMPERDOWN has handed local rivals the Cobden Bombers their second loss of the season.
In front of a home crowd last Saturday, the Magpies rose to the occasion for the round five WorkSafe Country Club Series clash, defeating the Bombers by 56 points.
The highly anticipated clash drew a large crowd to Leura Oval, keen to see not only some good on-field action but also take the opportunity to meet special guests for the day, Western Bulldogs 2016 premiership player Tom Boyd and Melbourne Vixens’ Maggie Caris.
Camperdown senior coach Neville Swayn praised his side for playing some “strong, consistent footy.”
“It was a big day for our club, with the WorkSafe round and Will (Rowbottom) playing his 100th so getting the win was the icing on the cake for us.
“Will played a huge game against one of the best ruckman in the competition which was pleasing to see. Our consistency across the four quarters was also pleasing and we forced them into making errors and then capitalised.
“We’ll take this into this weekend when we face Port Fairy on their home ground which is always a great challenge but hopefully we can get the job done.”
With Cameron Spence currently nursing a hamstring injury, and Hamish Sinnott expected to return to Geelong for his VFL commitments, Swayn said he would look to possibly include some new faces to the senior line-up this weekend.
“We’ve got some reserves playing some really good footy as well as three or four guys in the under 18s so there’s plenty of depth there – we’ve certainly got some options.”
Final scores last Saturday were Camperdown 16.12.108 to Cobden 7.10.52.
Best for the Magpies were Will Rowbottom, Josh Place, Hamish Sinnott, Cameron Spence, Eric Guthrie and Tom Baker.
Paddy Baker and Sam Gordon kicked three each for the Magpies while Angus Gordon, Eric Guthrie and Cameron Spence added two each and Dominic Absalom, Tom Baker, Sidney Bradshaw and Hamish Sinnott kicked one apiece.
Earlier in the day it was Cobden who took the win over Camperdown in the reserves match, 10.15.75 to 2.7.19.
Best for the home side were Nick Jones, Luke Ball, Will Kosch, James O’Neil, Jeremy Lucas and Connor Jackson.
Geordie Adam and Eddie Lucas kicked a goal each.
In the open netball match, the Magpies (spurred on by encouraging words from Vixen Maggie Caris) fought hard against the third-placed Bombers but fell just five goals short, 49-54.
