Magpies stay focussed
CAMPERDOWN remains in the top five on the Hampden League ladder despite a shock loss to ninth-placed Hamilton last weekend.

CAMPERDOWN remains in the top five on the Hampden League ladder despite a shock loss to ninth-placed Hamilton last weekend.
The Magpies handed the Kangaroos their first win of the season on Saturday, a notion that isn’t lost on Camperdown coach Neville Swayn and his charges.
“It was certainly disappointing (to not get the win) because we got ourselves into a winning position and were five goals up early in the third quarter,” Swayn said.
“But for whatever reason, we allowed Hamilton to get back into the game by three-quarter time and that gave them momentum, which they took into the first 10 minutes of the final quarter.
“We responded but it was all too late and we went down by four points.”
Swayn said his side would learn from the weekend and move forward, keen to push hard in the second half of the season.
“The ladder is extremely tight and, realistically, from second to eighth any of those sides could make the five.
“To be sitting fourth half way through the year, with five wins, not many thought we’d be in this position so we know we’ve got a lot of improvement within the group and we’re proud of that.”
Swayn said the competition had become “extremely even” this season, aside from ladder leaders South Warrnambool who, he believes, have become the benchmark.
The Magpies will this weekend take on another of the big improvers this season, Terang Mortlake, who currently sit second.
“We’re looking forward to taking on the Bloods on our home ground; it will be interesting to see how we go,” Swayn said.
“There’s never really been much between us over recent years; they beat us by a kick in round one but we’ll be keen to reverse that result tomorrow (Saturday).”
Final scores last Saturday were Hamilton 13.4.82 to Camperdown 10.18.78.
Best for the Magpies were Sam Gordon, Joshua Place, Jonty Lafferty and Cameron Spence.
Gordon had a great day out in front of the posts, kicking seven for the day, and was well supported by Dominic Absalom, Zach Sinnott and Harry Sumner who each contributed a goal.
Camperdown’s reserves remain on the hunt for their second win of the season, defeated by Hamilton 12.8.80 to 2.7.19.
Nick Castle, Myles Sinnott, Byron Loader and Devon Coates were named among the best for the Magpies.
Earlier in the day, Camperdown’s under 18.5s went down to Hamilton 10.13.73 to 1.1.7.
Myles Sinnott was the only goal kicker for the Magpies and was named in the team’s best along with Brock Stephens, Logan Mahony, Wilba Cheeseman, Scott Londregan and Eddie Baker.
It was a tough round for Camperdown on the netball courts, winning just one game for the day.
