Magpies swoop at home
CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers will head into this weekend’s bye round with win number four under their belts after defeating Hamilton by 34 points last weekend.
In front of a home crowd on Saturday the Magpies took an early lead, kicking 3.3 to 1.3 in the opening term, before extending the lead to 23 points by the main break.
A low-scoring second half from both sides saw the Magpies add 2.9 to the scoreboard while restricting the visitors to just 1.4.
Final scores were Camperdown 6.18.54 to Hamilton 2.8.20.
Reflecting on last weekend’s game, senior coach Neville Swayn said he was happy with how the side went given the wet conditions.
“It certainly wasn’t the prettiest game to watch but in saying that it was also our first one this year in the wet,” Swayn said.
“Our statistics show we dominated in pretty much all areas of the ground which was pleasing, but unfortunately that wasn’t really reflected on the scoreboard.
“Our midfielders worked well, those conditions seemed to have suited them around the contested ball.”
Swayn believes if the side can pick up at least five wins from the last seven rounds they may still have a chance at playing finals footy.
“Who knows, anything can happen we’ll just take it week to week and focus on the next game ahead.”
Angus Gordon booted home three majors for the Magpies on Saturday while Wilba Cheeseman added two and Tom Baker contributed one.
Best for the side were Matthew Field, Joshua Place, Zach Sinnott, Luke O’Neil, Charlie Lucas and Riley Arnold.
The reserves worked hard earlier in the day to take the win over the Kangaroos by 68-points, 13.7.85 to 2.5.17.
Fraser Lucas, Will Kosch, Brian Fanning, Shane Morgan, Paddy Baker and James McVilly were named in the best.
Baker kicked five goals while Tim Fitzgerald added four and Luke Ball two.
Geordie Adam and Riley Kayler-Thomson also contributed goals to the board.
Camperdown’s Open grade netballers chalked up win number six against the bottom-placed Hamilton last weekend and now sit just a game outside the top five.
