Masons welcome master

THE Mt Shadwell Masonic Lodge in Mortlake played host to a large group recently for the lodge’s 2022 installation.
The installation was held last month with 80 members and partners of the 2022 Victorian Installation team in attendance, as well as partners from lodges across the region.
William Woolhouse was installed as new worshipful master, replacing immediate past master Craig Wood.
“It’s an honour and privilege,” Mr Woolhouse said.
“The lodge is over 100 years old now so it is a real privilege.
“In the new year we will be looking to invite guest members from the public, including the Returned and Services League and Legacy, to come and speak in our lodge and talk about their very worthy contribution to supporting their members and the community.
“We hope to continue contributing in our own way, and intend to make donations towards groups we can assist.”
While masters usually serve a period of just one year, Mr Wood held the position for three years due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Woolhouse thanked Craig Wood for his dedication during a difficult time.
“We’ve honoured him in the lodge for continuing to be our master for three years, which is outstanding,” he said.
“Especially given the COVID restrictions because sometimes he had to run meetings via Zoom.
“He held the lodge together for the last three years.”
Officers for 2022-2023 include Sam Wilson as senior warder, Michael Gilmour as junior warden, Douglas Parker as chaplain, Colin Long as treasurer and Greg Howat as secretary.
The Mt Shadwell Lodge currently boasts 20 members, with two new members added in the last year and another joining in 2023.
“It’s very good for this lodge, the numbers are strong now,” Mr Woolhouse said.
“Freemasonry, across the board in Victoria, has had resurgence with a lot of interest and a lot of new members.
“It’s a positive.
“It’s simple with us; we’re a fraternity, a brotherhood, and we try to serve the community and make donations to worthy community organisations.”
