Mavericks win Mortlake volleyball
MAVERICKS have taken out premiership honours at the Mortlake Volleyball competition.
Mavericks went head-to-head in the grand final showdown against Rebels during the first volleyball pennant for season 2024.
The match went to five sets and proved entertaining for spectators, with long rallies and skilful serving.
Mavericks won the first set 25-16 but Rebels turned the game around and took the second set, 25-16.
The teams both won a set in the following two, which led to a deciding tie-breaker.
Rebels got out of the blocks early, winning the first few points, before Mavericks kicked in to win the set 15-9 and take the premiership.
Congratulations to Mavericks players Paul Riches, Flynn Riches, John Tanner, Sarah McMaster, Olivia Campbell and Lexi Maher.
Paul, Flynn, Sarah and Lexi were all debutante players in this pennant.
Runners-up Rebels comprised Bray Wright, Ryan Tanner, Judi Robertson and Leanne Hampson.
Deca Bradbury umpired the grand final, with other pennant players helping score and judge lines.
Sarah McMaster took out the women’s best and fairest award on 13 votes, with Olivia Campbell runner-up on 11.
John Tanner won the men’s vote on 13, with Bray Wright the runner-up on 12.
